Orthopedic and Musculoskeletal Disorders
I chose this particular topic for my resource file because it is near and dear to my heart. My oldest daughter was born with a congenital (meaning "born with") anomolies of her skeletal structure and organs. Her condition is knowns as VACTERL association: a condition in which a group of certain anomolies occur. She was born with congestive heart failure, hip dysplasia, scoliosis, an enlarged right kidney, multiple spleens, a missing radius on her left arm, and an extra thumb on her right hand. Her internal abnormalities are what worry me the most, but for Bella, her outer abnormalities are what bother her the most. Most times, she is able to cope quite well. But occasionally she suffers from exclusion by her peers and a general lack of understanding for her condition. I hope that this resource provides information for you as an educator on how to address exceptionalities like Bella's. There are many people with much more severe cases than Bella. I hope you find this resource file a useful tool in helping you as an educator undestand the needs of students with orthopedic and musculoskeletal disabilities.
